The serialization of the two grand epics on the state controlled national television network has affected the Indian society at large. Even though communal conflicts and civic unrest were certainly not an intended objective of such programmes on the national television network popularly known as Doordarshan. In the late 1980s, the national television network was used as a tool for cultural homogenization and for the electoral benefits through creation of an Indian national character closely identified with the majoritarian prejudices of the ruling political party. The grand epics on the national television network were the result of close connection between increasing number of middle class, commercial advertising and the use of television network for electoral purposes.
