Migration is practiced by people since time immemorial. Movement by man from one place to another is continued from pre-civilization period. In the initial stage, the people started movements from one destination to another in search of better pastures, water and land has been documented. Mainly these movements have been justified and will always be for various systemic, economic, social, political and individual reasons. Migration has been used as strategy(ies) by the Santal tribes to sustain their livelihood and poverty alleviation at the place of origin. But assessment on the identity of tribal population and the endeavor they take during this transition from one place to another has not been documented much. The socio-demographic structure i.e. age, sex, education, occupation and income have determined the context in which migration take place and their identity are also predetermined by various factors at the destination areas. Santal migration and their identity are inter –related in number of ways. Most obviously, the movement of human populations can promote the acculturation and influence migrants at the place of destination. Understanding of contemporary tribal identities requires a basic appreciation of the historical processes which have been determined the course of successive changes in socio-cultural, economic, ideological and political life of the tribes. Keeping in mind the vastness of the Indian sub-cultural multitudeness of those people, one can only generalize that the historical experiences would be as variable for different people as their interaction with their ecology and the neighbouring culture from time to time. For the understanding of identity formations of the tribe, one has to initiate the dialogue between the past and the present day context where globalization plays a pivotal role.
