About the book:-

Following the success of the Grameen Bank model of Bangladesh, microfinance has been used as a tool in many developing countries for assisting the economically disadvantaged people in accessing bank finance instead of depending on informal lenders paying usurious interest rates, engage themselves in productive activities, and improve their standard of living. Thus financial inclusion and poverty alleviation have been among the main objectives of microfinance sector not only in India but in several parts of the world. However, in the case of some MFIs the profit motive predominated leading to considerable debate on the lending and recovery practices of MFIs and the steps initiated to introduce legislation at the state and the central level to regulate MFIs. In an effort to contribute and generate some more ideas to the existing literature in the area of microfinance in the crucial phase of transformation of the sector, the GITAM School of International Business, GITAM University, organized the National Seminar on Microfinance Sector in India: Challenges and Opportunities on 10th September 2011 at Visakhapatnam to discuss, inter alia, the paradigm shift required for the MFI sector, legal and regulatory issues and social, ethical and governance aspects of MFIs. The speakers, contributors and participants include policy makers, government officials, professionals, and practitioners and researchers. This book is an edited volume of the views, ideas, experiences and research works of the participants. I am sure that this volume will stimulate discussions which may contribute to policy decisions in fast changing environment of microfinance sector in India. This book was not possible without the support and cooperation from all the contributors
