Description
Women have always been among the marginalised sections of society. In a postcolonial country like India, women are doubly marginalised – first as a postcolonial subject and secondly as a woman. Breaking that pattern for the first time, women writers like Shashi Deshpande, Shobha De and ManjuKapur, managed to make a name for themselves in a solely male dominated literary world. Their works not only created immortal woman characters but also went on to inspire films. If we really have to consider a canon of women writers in Indian English, then these writers will be the ones whose contribution will be the largest. All of them have explored women issues through their novels and created many memorable empowered women characters. This work tries to read their works as Indian women’s struggle against patriarchy. It shows how these women challenge patriarchy by subverting the very space within which they have been entrapped for generations – the domestic space.
